Severe diabetes refers to conditions where blood glucose levels are dangerously out of control due to insulin deficiency or resistance. It leads to serious complications if not managed properly.
Type 2 diabetes is long-term high blood sugar caused by insulin resistance and/or low insulin. Diagnosis: A1C, fasting glucose, OGTT. Treatment: lifestyle, weight management, and medication when needed.
Prediabetes means blood sugar is higher than normal but not diabetes. Diagnosed by A1C 5.7–6.4% or fasting glucose 100–125 mg/dL. Lifestyle change (5–7% weight loss + 150 min/week activity) can lower risk.
Hypothyroidism means the thyroid doesn’t make enough hormone. Diagnosis: blood tests (TSH and free T4). Treatment: thyroid hormone replacement (levothyroxine) with regular monitoring.
Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune thyroid condition that can lead to hypothyroidism. Diagnosis: TSH, free T4, and TPO antibodies. Treatment: levothyroxine if hypothyroid; if hormones are normal, monitoring may be enough.
Hyperthyroidism is excess thyroid hormone. Diagnosis: low TSH with high T4/T3. Treatment options include antithyroid medicines, radioiodine, or surgery (individualized).
Thyroid nodules are common lumps in the thyroid. Most are benign. Evaluation includes ultrasound and thyroid blood tests (TSH). If needed, an ultrasound-guided FNA biopsy helps assess cancer risk.
A goiter is an enlarged thyroid that can cause a neck swelling. Evaluation includes ultrasound and thyroid blood tests (TSH/T4). Treatment may be monitoring, treating the underlying cause, radioiodine, or surgery if needed.
