What is Arrhythmia?

It occurs due to a malfunction in the heart’s electrical impulses, causing the heartbeat to be out of rhythm. This includes tachycardia (fast), bradycardia (slow), or irregular beats.


Causes:

  • Heart attack or heart muscle damage
  • High blood pressure
  • Electrolyte imbalance (potassium, sodium)
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Smoking, alcohol, stress
  • Certain medications


Symptoms:

  • Rapid or slow heartbeat
  • Chest discomfort or tightness
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sensation of “skipped” or “jumping” heartbeats


Diagnosis:

  • ECG (electrocardiogram)
  • Holter monitor (24-hour heart rhythm recording)
  • Heart ultrasound
  • Blood tests


Treatment:

  • Antiarrhythmic medications
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Pacemaker implantation
  • Healthy lifestyle adjustments
