Tonsils are lymphatic tissues in the throat that help trap pathogens. When infected, they become swollen and inflamed.
Types of Tonsillitis:
- Acute tonsillitis (angina) – short-term and intense symptoms
- Chronic tonsillitis – long-lasting inflammation with frequent recurrences
Common Symptoms:
- Sore throat, especially while swallowing
- High fever and general weakness
- Bad breath
- White or yellow coating on the tonsils
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
Diagnosis:
- ENT examination
- Throat swab and rapid strep test
- Blood test (CBC)
Treatment:
- Pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs
- Antibiotics (if bacterial)
- Gargling (with saline or antiseptic solutions)
- Immune support
- In chronic cases — tonsillectomy (surgical removal of tonsils)
