Sinusitis (Inflammation of the Paranasal Sinuses)

Sinuses are air-filled cavities in the skull that connect to the nasal passages. Inflammation can block drainage, allowing mucus and infection to accumulate.


Types of Sinusitis:

  • Acute sinusitis – lasts up to 4 weeks
  • Chronic sinusitis – persists for more than 12 weeks
  • Allergic sinusitis – caused by allergens


Symptoms:

  • Headache (especially forehead or cheeks)
  • Nasal congestion and obstruction
  • Facial pressure or tenderness
  • Yellow or green nasal discharge
  • Fever, fatigue, loss of smell


Diagnosis:

  • ENT specialist evaluation
  • Digital X-ray or CT scan
  • Nasal endoscopy


Treatment:

  • Saline nasal irrigation
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Nasal sprays and decongestants
  • Antibiotics for bacterial infection
  • Surgical drainage in severe or chronic cases
