Pneumonia (Lung Inflammation)

Pneumonia is a serious respiratory condition involving infection and inflammation in the alveoli of the lungs. It can be a complication of the flu, common cold, or COVID-19, especially in people with weak immune systems.


Main causes:

  • Bacteria (commonly Streptococcus pneumoniae)
  • Viruses (influenza, COVID-19)
  • Fungal infections (in immunocompromised patients)
  • Secondary infection after bronchitis or cold


Symptoms:

  • High fever (above 38°C)
  • Dry or productive cough
  • Shortness of breath, pain during deep breaths
  • Fatigue, chills
  • Chest discomfort or tightness


Diagnosis:

  • Chest X-ray or CT scan
  • Blood tests (CBC, CRP)
  • Lung auscultation (doctor listens with a stethoscope)


Treatment:

  • Antibiotics or antiviral medication (depending on cause)
  • Bed rest and adequate fluid intake
  • Physiotherapy for breathing support
  • Ongoing monitoring of lung function
