Bell’s Palsy (Facial Nerve Palsy)

Bell’s Palsy (Facial Nerve Palsy)

Bell’s Palsy — facial paralysis.

In most cases this problem fully recovers — the most important step is early diagnosis and correct treatment.

Why it happens (simple explanation)

Main cause — inflammation of the facial nerve (often herpes virus). Cold wind, stress, low immunity, diabetes or pregnancy increase the risk.

How it is diagnosed

Evaluation is done step by step:

  • Neurological examination and facial muscle testing
  • Eye movement and taste testing
  • MRI if needed (to rule out other causes)
  • EMG (nerve activity measurement)

How it is treated

Treatment is most effective if started within the first 72 hours.

Medications

Corticosteroids (prednisolone) — main drug, antiviral (acyclovir) as additional.

Non-medication methods

Eye drops and eye patch (to protect the eye), facial exercises, physiotherapy and acupuncture speed up recovery.

Surgical methods

Very rarely, if no recovery, nerve decompression is considered.
