Hydrocele

Hydrocele

Hydrocele — fluid collection around the testicle.

In most cases this problem is simple and quickly treated — the most important step is finding the exact cause.

Why it happens (simple explanation)

Main causes: congenital (in children), trauma, infection, varicocele or after previous surgery. Fluid drainage is blocked and it builds up.

How it is diagnosed

Evaluation is done step by step:

  • Urological examination (palpation of the scrotum)
  • Ultrasound scan (to clearly see the fluid)
  • Transillumination (light test) if needed

How it is treated

Treatment is chosen individually if necessary.

Conservative methods

Small hydrocele can be observed and supported with special underwear.

Surgical methods

If fluid is large or causes discomfort, hydrocelectomy (removal of fluid and strengthening the sac) is performed. It is a simple and fast-recovery operation.
