Epilepsy — seizure disorder.
In most cases epilepsy can be well controlled — the most important step is accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.
Why it happens (simple explanation)
Main causes: genetic, brain trauma, stroke, infections (meningitis), tumors, birth injury or unknown (idiopathic). It can start at any age.
How it is diagnosed
Evaluation is done step by step:
- Neurological examination and detailed video history of attacks
- EEG (recording brain electrical activity) — main test
- MRI or CT (to see brain structure)
- Long-term EEG monitoring if needed
How it is treated
Treatment is individual and often long-term.
Medications
Antiepileptic drugs (carbamazepine, valproate, levetiracetam etc.) stop seizures in 70-80% of cases.
Non-medication methods
Regular sleep schedule, stress reduction, avoiding alcohol and certain medications, special ketogenic diet (especially in children).
Surgical methods
If drugs don’t help, brain stimulation or surgery is considered.
